LAND/The Working Garden
Project type
Installation, Research and Social Practice
Date
2019
Location
INDEX Festival, Wakefield
& Margate NOW
LAND/ The Working Garden, was a commission for myself and Artist Tom Verity as a collaborative project.
Tom designed the structure that was inspired by gothic architecture and in contrast with the typical functional design of a greenhouse.
Originally installed in Wakefield as part of the INDEX Festival, the structure then traveled to be installed in Windmill Community Gardens in Margate as part of the Margate NOW Festival.
In both locations I spent time researching the local land use, documenting and exploring areas of commons and community green space, I also met with leaders from community gardens.
From this research I made a sound installation which integrated interviews with community leaders with sounds of the natural spaces they cultivated - this was installed inside the greenhouse structure at each location and the audience were invited inside as a space to listen.
I made the document attached that was printed as a publication and displayed inside the structure for the audience to take away the sections that interested them most. These publications were distributed throughout the festival to sign post visitors to local green spaces.
During the Margate NOW Festival myself and Tom led a series of walks, talks and workshops in and around the installation at Windmill Community Gardens. I was also invited to show the sound installation and a short film at Turner Contemporary as part of the Margate NOW Takeover.
