Open School East

For the end of year show at Open School East I used the project funding awarded to associate artists to create an immersive sound installation and short film.

To make these new works I spent time in my home town on the North Yorkshire coast, learning about the local mining industry, scientific research taking place underground, local mythology and the communities relationship to place. Boulby Mine is the deepest in Europe, primarily a salt mine, the site now also houses a research lab where scientists are investigating dark matter.

I spent time in the area filming and photographing the landscape and interviewing miners to tell their stories and experiences of this vast and changing space that stretches underneath the village they inhabit and the North Sea.

The interviews and footage became the sound installation and short film that intermingled fact and speculative fiction to explore place, identity, class, social and material histories.
